Awareness Through Movement
Zoom Classes
Awareness Through Movement was designed by the founder of The Feldenkrais® Method, Moshe Feldenkrais, as a way to share benefits of his work with a wider audience.
These classes offer a precious opportunity to help you feel better on a daily basis physically and emotionally. In each class you will be guided through a series of gentle movements designed to help you feel better naturally, without having to force а change or look for problems to fix.
There are no special technique or skills to master – the focus is on exploring simple, functional, everyday movements, but done slower, in a smaller range, and with less effort. You will be asked to comfortably lie on the floor and gently slide your arms or legs on the floor, roll your head, or tilt the pelvis and so on. In this class you are always encouraged to move in a range that is easy and simple, which makes it safe to practice for people of various levels of fitness and ability.
How it works – Relying on Natural, Unconscious Change
Slowing down and decreasing range and effort, helps increase awareness, naturally allowing you notice more subtle details and nuances of how you move. Increased awareness naturally leads to change, thanks to neuroplasticity, brain’s natural tendency to rewire itself based on the differences it can sense.
While this might sound like a very complex process, your part of it is simple – following guided movement directions, skipping or modifying any movements that don’t feel good to you, and taking breaks in between. The rest will happen at an unconscious level.
As you become more aware of your movement, the way you feel naturally improves: unnecessary tension is released, breathing becomes easier, posture, balance and coordination improve without you having to think about them.
You leave the class feeling more grounded, present and at ease and this new way of being seamlessly integrates into your daily life.
Class FAQ for New Students
What is this class like?
In this class you’ll be guided through a series of gentle movements done in a comfortable position (usually lying down). As you become more aware of your movement, the way you feel naturally improves: unnecessary tension is released, breathing becomes easier, and your overall state becomes more balanced.
I have an injury or physical limitation. Is this class for me?
Yes. Movements you’ll be guided through are accessible for people of various levels of fitness and ability. You are also encouraged to skip or modify movements that don’t feel good to you for any reason. However, if you have any specific questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I’ll be happy to tell you more about the class and answer questions.
What should I wear?
Please wear comfortable clothes that don’t interfere with your movement.
What do I need to prepare for class?
It’s best to lie on a blanket, quilt or soft carpet (something softer than a yoga mat)
What is the best time to take class?
It’s best to take class at least 1 hour after a big meal and to avoid intense physical activity right after class to help integrate what your nervous system learned.
Is it like Yoga, Pilates, Gym?
Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement is not an exercise, but an opportunity to help improve quality of your movement, by gently exploring movement. Unlike other modalities, the focus is not on repetition, stretching, or strengthening, but rather on staying in the range of comfort an ease, in order to expand that range by improving overall quality of your movements.
Is it difficult? Do I need special training?
No. The goal of each lesson is to help you thoroughly become aware of how you naturally move, in a way that leads to improvement. No special skills required, because each class invites you to move like yourself, only slower and smaller. It’s not difficult physically, because rather than pushing the limits, you explore the range where movement is easy, simple, and efficient.
