What is a First Session Like?

Movement is life. Life is a process. Improve the quality of the process and you improve the quality of life itself.

What to Expect in Your First Feldenkrais® Session?

Stepping into your first Feldenkrais session is the beginning of a journey toward greater self-awareness and ease in how you move and feel. With the support of a certified Feldenkrais practitioner, the session provides a gentle, personalized experience aimed at helping you connect with your body in new ways, releasing tension, and discovering freedom in movement.

The Process

What Happens During a Feldenkrais Session?

In each session, my goal is to meet you, as you are and help create an experience that will most effectively address your specific concern, and bring improvements in overall mind-body state at the same time.

After discussing your goals for the session, we’ll start by finding a position that is comfortable for you (usually lying down) and use props such as towels, bolsters, pads, or blankets to make sure that there isn’t any tension that would interfere with the session.

Then through gentle touch and subtle movement, I provide non-intrusive feedback to help your brain and nervous system naturally discover greater ease and freedom of movement. As the session progresses unnecessary tension is released, breathing becomes easier, and your overall state becomes more balanced and grounded.

This approach enables you to enter a relaxed state, often drifting between awake and asleep, where deeper learning and change naturally occur. No conscious effort is required from you, as your body learns new ways of moving and releases unnecessary tension.

Throughout the session your input is welcome, appreciated, and always taken into account. I will check in with you periodically to make sure you are feeling comfortable or have questions.

Through awareness, we can learn to move with astonishing lightness and freedom at almost any age. — Moshe Feldenkrais.

Integration and Reflection

End of Session

As we wrap up our session, you may notice a delightful shift in how you feel—physically and emotionally. Many clients describe a profound sense of balance, feeling more grounded and present. Your breath may flow more freely, and you may be surprised that tightness or tension that you’ve been taking for granted has disappeared without a trace. This newfound state of ease will continue deepening and integrating long after we are done with the session. In fact some people surprised to realize that a day or two later they experience unexpected improvement in the way they feel overall or specific movements and positions became easier and more enjoyable.

Clients often share that they experience a lasting transformation in their movement, reporting a heightened sense of balance and coordination that feels almost effortless. One client summed it up perfectly when they said,

“I am always amazed at how much looser and how spacious my body feels after a session. It doesn’t seem logical that with such small, soft, quiet movements so much space is created.”

To fully enjoy these changes, I encourage you to avoid scheduling physically demanding or emotionally stressful activities right after the session. Allowing yourself to take it easy after the session gives your nervous system precious time for integration of new state into daily life.  You don’t need to focus on noticing what is different, just giving yourself time to integrate is enough – integration will happen naturally.

Common Questions About Your First Feldenkrais Session

Do I need to do anything to prepare?

Absolutely not! The beauty of the Feldenkrais Method lies in its simplicity. Just arrive dressed in comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows you to move freely. It’s also helpful to bring an open mind and a willingness to explore your body’s movement patterns.

Is Feldenkrais painful?

No, it’s quite the opposite. Feldenkrais is designed to be a gentle and soothing method. It focuses on comfort, ease, and your unique experience. The touch is gentle and movements are done in a range that does not require forcing or stretching. This allows you to stay in a state of ease, and maximize an opportunity for improvement, because your nervous system naturally learns better in that state.

How long is each session?

Each Feldenkrais session is 60 minutes. This duration is ideal for us to delve into your specific needs and goals without feeling rushed. It provides ample time for discussion at the beginning, where we’ll talk about what you hope to achieve, followed by the hands-on portion, which is where the transformative work takes place.

How will I feel afterwards?

After a session, most clients describe feeling more relaxed, refreshed, and aligned in their bodies. You might notice a greater sense of ease in your movements, enhanced coordination, and a release of any unnecessary tension. Many report feeling more grounded and present, as if they’ve shed layers of stress.
