Pain Relief & The Feldenkrais® Method
The Feldenkrais® Method, developed by Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais, is a gentle, non-invasive approach to pain relief that focuses on improving movement and increasing self-awareness. This method is based on the idea that by learning to move more efficiently, we can reduce pain and improve overall physical function.
Many people who practice the Feldenkrais® Method report significant reductions in chronic pain, including back pain, neck pain, and joint pain, improved mobility, balance, and coordination.
Relieving Pain with the Feldenkrais® Method
The Feldenkrais® Method offers a unique and effective approach to pain relief by helping a person improve their habitual movement patterns and discover new, more efficient ways of moving that no longer cause pain, or build up tension.
How is it different from physical therapy and exercise?
Physical therapy and exercise for the most part focus on strengthening muscles around the affected area or related to a particular function and on adjusting a person's movement and posture from the outside – telling a person to move differently in order to prevent tension from building up.
Strengthening and stretching does not result in qualitative change – since a person has the same old movement habits, they continue to move in ways that recreate pain.
Correcting posture and movement through conscious effort fails, because these are too many dynamic elements in movement, and we can only correct a few of them through focused conscious effort. Corrections done in this way cannot be integrated, because it does not include the whole person. And indeed, the moment a person gets busy with a demanding task, they revert to old habits, which are still more efficient, even if they cause pain.
Advantages of this work:
Low impact, Low risk of Injury: Movements that help retrain your brain and improve your habits are gentle and slow. There is no need to focus on stretching or strengthening, which are not always effective and often carry higher than average risk of injury for people who are already suffering from chronic pain.
Long term improvement by changing habitual movement patterns.
Accessible to people of various levels of fitness and ability. Goal of each session is to meet the person where they are at and help them discover a way to naturally discover possibilities of new, easy, pain free movement. There are no prerequisites: no techniques to learn, no positions to memorize.
In a group class, students are guided through simple, functional movement, without the need to memorize or imitate the teacher.
Every person has a potential to improve their movement habits, reduce tension, alleviate pain, by tapping into the intelligence of their nervous system.
Testimonials: Real-Life Transformations
Many of my clients were able to alleviate pain and discomfort through group classes and private sessions. Some came to Feldenkrais®.
Scientific Evidence:
Numerous studies have suggested that this therapeutic approach involves in-depth affiliation of mind and body via thought processes and movements that influence overall physical efficiencies. For instance, this Research Gate study proves the huge potential of the Feldenkrais® method’s effectiveness. Another study that involved people with visual impairment enduring chronic neck/scapular pain suggested the benefits of the Feldenkrais® method with one year of follow-up sessions.
